This building was an ice cream parlor in the early 1950s and possibly before. The post office was located in the small addition on the left end. There was no mail delivery in Kirkwood until about 1980 and everyone had to go and get their mail. This gave Kirkwood a sense of community because you could spend 20 minutes at the post office and get all the latest local news from your neighbors. This building was replaced by the building that is now "The Coop," and the post office occupied the left 1/2 until the Voorhees post office was build in Glendale.
At the age of seven, in 1959, two of us who were second graders would be chosen to walk from the Kirkwood School to the post office (about a block) to get the mail each day.
